To promote research and publication, SRF offers a clutch of journals analysing and evaluating the diverse concerns in the multidisciplinary field of Liberal Humanities :
Samyukta: A Journal of Gender & Culture is a bi-annual, peer-reviewed, academic journal published from Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala, India, since January 2001. Through incisive questioning of entrenched stances and deep biases, the journal has by now emerged as a leading publication from India in the field of Gender and Cultural Studies. Acknowledging the fact that our thinking, language and actions are defined by culture, papers published in Samyukta have consistently examined the cultural dimensions that impact gender roles. More recently the journal has foregrounded the ethics of sexual difference in its papers as a matter of policy. A galaxy of scholars from India and abroad, Margot Badran, Uma Chakravarti, Imrana Qadeer, Sneja Gunew, Ritu Menon, Ilina Sen to name a few, have acted as Guest Editors for the journal.
Samyukta is widely recognised for the unmatched quality of its contents. Fine, closely researched papers published in Samyukta have found their way into Readers and textbooks. Several papers published in Samyuta have been included as required reading in the syllabi of universities within the country and abroad. Select issues have been published as books by major publishers such as Women Unlimited, Orient Blackswan and Oxford University Press.
Samyukta Journal of Peace Studies, an initiative of Samyukta Research Foundation (SRF), is a bi-annual multidisciplinary journal of scholarly work on Peace Studies. It examines some of the most pressing issues of the 21stcentury, the paradigms around which our lives are organized and the vision of alternative possibilities. The journal encourages a broad conception of peace while focusing on research, reflection and dialogue, stressing orientation necessary to forge peace, conflict resolution and non-violence.
The journal is dedicated to enhance discourse on a wide range of fundamental and theoretical issues in Peace Studies in the quest for sustainable peace. It focuses on issues aligned with the objectives for inquiry, substantiated by an understanding of the interplay between theory and praxis to critically evaluate situations of conflict leading to violence in everyday lives. With detailed studies on the precarious condition of peace at present times, the journal will promote the necessary level of commitment to effect a change for the better.
Samyukta Journal of Sexuality Studies is a bi-annual, peer-reviewed international journal that will look to present cutting-edge critical studies on sexualities. The journal will be a nod to the crucial ways in which sexualities interact with the histories of society and polity and thus engage with life chances. It will look to document transactional and transnational networks that have become vocal in cultural and civil economies through intersectionalities that call for restructured identities.
Having said this, we will also keep our options open and house creative attempts that seek to explore experiences and abstractions. This makes the journal accessible to everyone, right from the scholar looking for well-informed discourses to those who simply seek to learn, understand and possibly, identify. Samyukta Journal of Sexuality Studies will be a relevant presence on account of the fluidity of its scope, its contemporaneity, its breadth of vision and perception. It will be especially sensitive to the evolutionary trajectories of conversations on sexualities worldwide.
Samyukta Journal on Cinema is an international refereed journal committed towards exploring, discussing and critiquing the dynamic world of cinema and its associated cultural practices. In a world proliferated with images, cinema holds immense significance as markers and milestones of our cultural consciousness, public history and intensely personal experiences. We encourage a comprehensive reading of films – inclusive of the diverse genres, styles and formats – intricately linked to the triad of production, distribution and reception through social, cultural, economic, political and historical lens. The scope of the journal extends beyond individual films to connect cinema as a cultural practice in larger expanding terrains.
Samyukta Journal on Cinema reaches out to passionate viewers, researchers, academicians, critics, scholars, students and film people. Dedicated towards exploring the multi-pronged approaches to cinema culture, the journal is interested in uncovering the ideological underpinnings framing its aesthetics, philosophy, methodologies, theories and cultural geographies. Transcending boundaries of national cinemas, we are interested in re-viewing films and film cultures partaking in the making of a language in an increasingly globalized world.
Samyukta Journal of Popular Culture envisions a meticulous compilation of scholarly discussions on mass / popular culture with its ever widening repertoire of genres, both conventional and off-the-wall. While many of them are still in the process of being repositioned within cultural contexts, both academic and impressionistic investigations in the right direction will help make sense of their diverse implications. The objective, therefore is to facilitate the exploration of the complexities of this rapidly expanding area through an eclectic approach, mingling theoretical debates and modes of inquiry from various disciplines.
Alongside technology, global terrorism and also the recent outbreak of the pandemic have given rise to a new body of literature and culture forms that deplore, philosophize, romanticize, politicize, and sometimes even laugh at the vulnerability and horrors of survival in a world full of surprises, anxieties and uncertainties. Samyukta Journal of Popular Culture hopes to open up a field for a battle of wits involving enthusiastic researchers who wish to unravel the mysteries of cultural transformations through erudite and stimulating deliberations.
Samyukta Journal of Translation Studies, an international refereed journal, will focus on enriching the discipline of Translation Studies by framing translation in relation to other areas of academic enquiry. The Journal will carry translations from any language into English as well as reflections and theorizations on the process of translation. Articles from a multidisciplinary perspective which explore connections of translation with related fields, it is hoped, will lead to the discovery of new links.
The Samyukta Journal of Translation Studies which is expected to cater to all scholars who are interested in the phenomena of language, culture, and the perception and reception of knowledge, will feature translations into English, translators, translation publishers, translation news and translation reviews. Special features on the translation of children’s literature, comics, translation from text to images, and translation of rituals and literature related to rituals will be featured.
Samyukta Journal of South Asian Life Writing Studies is a pioneering effort to address the South Asian cosmos of life as narrated through an expansive anthology of practices that punctuate the cultural mobility of the region. British imperialism, the rich and diverse archives of the mythical bygones and ethno-cultures as well as their relentless retelling using the genealogies of the present, include a small yet significant part of the South Asian life experience. The tension between the assumed authenticity of a life and its expressive artifice of performance is a condition that confronts all life texts.
The journal intends to invest in this fundamental disjuncture that solicits a cross-disciplinary and cross-cultural dialogue of the theories of articulating, archiving and impressing the self across South Asia. It aims to delineate and comprehend the departures and apertures in the politics of aesthetics that command the reading, writing, telling and performing of life narratives in the South Asian imaginary. The journal would encourage a continued exchange of ideas between generations of scholars interested in Life Writing, and is committed to building an archive for future research.
Samyukta Journal of Health Humanities anticipates extending the ongoing discussions in Health Humanities and looks forward to welcoming diverse perspectives that explore the human condition at present. Re-reading medicine as a cultural narrative, analysing the representational politics of genres as diverse as graphic medicine, narrative medicine etc., questioning of biomedical ethics, critiquing of health policies and politics, interrogating the commercialisation of healthcare systems are some of the many areas of concern.
Multidisciplinary in nature, the objective of the journal is to address the complexities that sciences overlook and culture espouse. We hope to identify this rationale, defy dualisms that arise, transcend nomenclatures and arrive at a view doing justice to the shifting ideas of health and illness. We invite unspoken stories and refreshing scholarship from health professionals, academicians, caregivers and patients. For this conjoining of texts and voices from the sciences and the humanities, we await.
The professed mandate of the Samyukta Journal of Kerala Studies is to examine the theoretical deployment of the category of Kerala Studies in contemporary discourse and lend it disciplinary credence. It is a task fraught with danger, as it at once opens up and closes off the possibility of variant readings. We wish to understand the cultural history of Keralam in consonance with shifting national interests and across various historical periods. It is proposed to adopt an eclectic approach, leaving it to the contributing scholar to decide the theoretical tools that will come in handy, as long as the connect with the local and the specific is not lost sight of.
Scholars are encouraged to question notions of disempowerment in terms of region, language, caste, class, gender, sexuality and so on, in order to explore how such ideas are implicated in epistemologies, histories and broader cultural practices. The journal welcomes studies of the “long history” of Keralam, its rich literature, culturally significant activities such as rituals and social customs, to visual and performing arts, theatre and cinema. We invite scholars to add to this list in the spirit of an explorer of unchartered seas; but not with the intent to conquest, plunder and loot.
